SOAP monitoring allows you to test the ability to connect and push sample data into a web service to ensure functionality from multiple locations around the world.
Once you add a SOAP monitor for your website, Monitis will start sending out SOAP requests to your web service at your preset regular intervals of time to check if your web service is accessible.
In most cases, failure status is returned by your SOAP monitor if:
- Failed to connect to the server.
- Your web service hasn’t responded within the predefined timeout
- Failed to push sample data
- Content matching failed for your specified text string
- Your provided username or password is not valid in case of basic authentication required by your web site.
Adding SOAP Monitor
To add an SOAP Monitor, go to the Monitors menu, select SOAP and click Add.
The Add Uptime Monitor – Step 1 window will open.
Under URL/IP, enter the URL or IP address of your web site.
Change the default port number under Port if needed.
Check the Over SSL checkbox if you want monitoring checks to be carried over a secure SSL connection.
Enter the value (seconds) under Timeout (sec). Your website will be considered down if not responded within this amount of time.
Enter the post data in the Post Data field.
Click Advanced Settings.
You can use the content matching feature to lookup a text string in the source code of your web page.
To do that, under Check for String, you can specify a text string to lookup in your website source code. If the string is not found during the monitoring check, your monitor will return a failure status. Choose between “Should contain” and “Should not contain” options in the combo box, and enter the text to match in the text box below. For example, use “Should not contain” to make sure your web page doesn’t show an error message.
Choose the HTTP version from the Version combo box to ensure compatibility of the HTTP protocol version with your web server.
You can also request header for your website under Request Header.
To specify the user agent, enter it in the User-Agent field.
To add HTTP header fields, click on Add header field to add a new field, and select the field name from available fields in the combo box.
If your web site uses basic authentication mechanism, you need to provide the user name and password for it, in order to enable Monitis access to your web site.
Click Next when finished. The Add Uptime Monitor – Step 2 window will open.
Select monitor group from the Select Monitor Group combo box. You can also create a new monitor group by clicking on the “+” icon next to Add Group.
Enter a name for your monitor under Enter Monitor Name.
Set the monitoring frequency for your website. By default, the check interval is set 1 min. Move the stepped slider under Check Interval (min) to increase the check interval.
Select the locations you want your website to be monitored from by checking the boxes next to the location names under Monitoring Locations.
Click Add when finished.
The Alert Configuration window will appear.
– Click Send to All Contacts if you want to send alerts for this monitor to all contacts.
– Click Custom Configuration (Advanced) to configure sending alerts for this monitor only to selected contacts. The Add notification rules window will open. Click on the Add Alert Rule button to configure alert rule(s) for your monitor (see Adding Alerts and Managing Alert Rules).
– Click Don’t Send Alerts if you don’t want any alerts for this monitor to be sent.
Your newly created SOAP monitor will appear in your Monitis Dashboard.
To manage your monitor, click on the icon in the top right corner of the monitor to open the context menu.
