HTTPS Monitoring

HTTPS monitoring allows you to test the availability and response time of your website from multiple locations around the world.

You should use HTTPS vs. HTTP monitoring if your web site uses HTTPS protocol for secure communication.

Once you add an HTTPS monitor for your website, Monitis will start sending out HTTPS requests to your website at your preset regular intervals of time to check if your website is accessible.

In most cases, failure status is returned by your HTTPS monitor if:

  • No response from the server within the set timeout
  • DNS resolving error
  • HTTP error
  • Network or connection error
  • Connection closed by server
  • Basic authentication failed
  • Content matching failure
  • SSL version not supported by user’s server

 

Adding HTTPS Monitor

To add an HTTPS Monitor, go to the Monitors menu and select Uptime Monitors->HTTPS.

The Add Uptime Monitor – Step 1 window will open.

Under URL/IP, enter the URL or IP address of your web site.

Note: When entering an IP, be sure this is a public IP and not an internal IP.  To monitor internal IP’s please use Internal Monitoring.

Change the default port number under Port if needed.

Select the Request methodPOST or GET. By default, GET method is selected. If you select POST, the POST DATA box will open, where you can input the data that you want to post (e.g. a web form field data).

Enter the value (seconds) under Timeout (sec). Your website will be considered down if not responded within this amount of time.

Click Show Advanced Settings.

You can use the content matching feature to lookup text strings in the source code of your web page.

To do that, under Check for String you can specify text strings to lookup in your website source code.

Choose between the following options, depending on the content match type you want to setup:

  • Should contain – should contain the string.
  • Should not contain – should NOT contain the string.
  • Should contain all of – should contain all the strings.
  • Should contain at least one of – should contain at least one of the strings.
  • Should not contain all of– should NOT contain all the strings.
  • Should not contain at least one of – should NOT contain at least one of the strings.

The last 4 options allow you to build logical expressions. To add a string, press the green + button.

Choose the HTTP version from the Version combo box to ensure compatibility of the HTTP protocol version with your web server.

You can also add header fields under Request Header.

To specify the user agent, enter it in the User-Agent field, or leave the default.

To add HTTP header fields, click on Add header field to add a new field, and select the field name from available fields in the combo box.

If your web site uses basic authentication mechanism, you need to provide the user name and password for it, in order to enable Monitis access to your web site.

To add more uptime monitors of different types to the same URL/IP, click the green “+” button under Add protocols you would like to monitor (see Adding Multiple Uptime Monitors to the Same URL/IP).

To add in bulk more HTTPS monitors for different URLs/IPs, click Switch to bulk mode.

Click Next when finished. The Add Uptime Monitor – Step 2 window will open.

Select monitor group from the Monitor Group combo box. You can also create a new monitor group by clicking on Add a new group.

Enter a name for your monitor under  Monitor Name.

Set the monitoring frequency for your website. By default, the check interval is set to 1 min. Move the stepped slider under Check Interval (min) to increase the check interval.

Select the locations you want your website to be monitored from by checking the boxes next to the location names under Monitoring Locations.

Note: It is strongly recommended to alert only after a monitor has failed from at least two locations for all monitors using multiple locations.  This will reduce network noise.

Click Add when finished.

The Alert Configuration window will appear.

– Click Send to All Contacts if you want to send alerts for this monitor to all contacts.

–  Click Custom Configuration (Advanced) to configure sending alerts for this monitor only to selected contacts. The Alert Configuration window will open. Click on the Add Alert Rule button to configure alert rule(s) for your monitor (see Adding Alerts and Managing Alert Rules).

– Click Don’t Send Alerts if you don’t want any alerts for this monitor to be sent.

Your newly created HTTPS monitor will appear in your Monitis dashboard. Wait until it will load the first results.

To manage your monitor, click on the icon in the top right corner of the monitor to open the context menu.
