We have included a list and short analysis of each of these ecommerce software products to help guide you in finding a solution that best suits your needs.

In addition to analyzing what we consider to be the pros and cons of each solution, we have provided an index graph that measures each company’s website. Using a 3rd party website traffic analysis tool, we have displayed how these companies compete in popularity – this will give you an unbiased view of which of these products is generating more traction. Our firt article will cover the following 5 products/vendors: Shopify, PrestaShop, 3D Cart, Nascent Commerce and Yahoo! Stores.

  1.     Shopify – http://www.shopify.com


Founded in 2004, and created by the company jaded Pixel, Shopify provides its customer with a number of ecommerce solutions to suit their needs and requirements. The company is based out of Ottawa, Canada, and has been well received by the media, including CNET, WallStreet Journal and the New York Times.

  • Users are charged on a per-transaction basis, rather than bandwidth usage.
  • Extremely easy-to-use interface.
  • Provides excellent scalability – it grows with the business.
  • Only provides 500MB of free storage, which is much less compared to its competitors.
  • Marketing tools are less robust in comparison to similar products.
  • Social media/social commerce integration is very limited.

2.     PrestaShop – http://www.prestashop.com

PrestaShop is a free professional ecommerce shopping cart software, founded in 2007 in Paris, France. The company claims to provide one of the best open source ecommerce solutions to the greatest number of business owners worldwide.

  • Very easy to customize and includes a large number of standard features.
  • Simple and quick to install.
  • Free solution, very fast, scalable, and customizable.
  • Customer Service is rated ‘low’ to ‘poor’.
  • Not recommended for inexperienced users.
  • Additional themes are chargeable, not free of charge as with competitors.

3.     3D Cart – http://www.3dcart.com

Developed by Infomart 2000, 3D Cart was first introduced in 2001. The company claims that 3D Cart is a complete ecommerce solution, at a fraction of the price. Today, 3D Cart is used by businesses worldwide including North America, UK, Argentina, Brazil, Turkey, Italy, France, and Spain.

  • Offers excellent start-up pricing for as low as $20/month.
  • Over 1,000 features available as part of the standard application.
  • Users receive 24/7 technical support.
  • Too many features available, which may seem very complex to beginners.
  • Hard to setup and may take longer compared to competitive products.
  • SEO is very difficult to configure, and takes an enormous amount time.

4.     Nascent Commerce – http://www.nascentcommerce.com

Located in Encino, CA, Nascent Commerce provides a “worry-free” ecommerce solution for any business seeking to conduct the sale of products online.

  • Very user-friendly and able to manage a large number of product catalogs.
  • Provides a large number of tools to drive traffic into the users’ site.
  • Provides a 15-day trial period.
  • To a new user, it may appear to be very complex and difficult to configure.
  • Priced higher than a number of other competitive products.
  • Additional fee to add the “shopping cart” to your site.


5.     Yahoo! Stores – http://store.yahoo.com

Yahoo ecommerce allows you to create & manage an online store with an ecommerce shopping cart from Yahoo! Merchant Solutions. Ecommerce hosting features include store design, inventory management, shopping cart services and more.

  • Excellent for start-up companies looking for tools to build and host sites, while providing a secure shopping cart.
  • 24/7 Customer support is available.
  • Very easy and quick setup.
  • Customer Service is very poor compared to competitive products.
  • Requires users to pay transaction fees.
  • Lacks proper SEO optimization.
