An army of Android soldiers is marching quickly into the battlegrounds of the 2014 market. The battles between Android and the rest (Windows, iOS, Blackberry, Chrome, others) are being fought and the OS war is being won significantly by Android. Total shipments of devices using the Android OS, worldwide, will exceed 1 billion in 2014. This will include the system embedded in; PCs, tablets, ultramobiles and mobile phones. The Gartner Group has forecasted that this year will see a industry wide ship number of over 2,000,000,000 devices, with Android in 1,000,000,000 of these devices, or just under 50% of the entire market for the year. The vast majority of this will be comprised of by mobile phones which will see a year on year increase of over 5%. As the markets grow, mature and develop it is just fueling more and more demand. “Consumers want anytime-anywhere computing that allows them to consume and create content with ease, but also share and access that content from a different portfolio of products. Mobility is paramount in both mature and emerging markets,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.
It seems that the current trends in the market, client demands and technological advancements are never ending and evolving so fast. Gartners’ Ranjit Atwal offers his perspective, “The device market continues to evolve, with buyers deciding which combination of devices is required to meet their wants and needs … Mobile phones are a must have and will continue to grow but at a slower pace, with opportunities moving away from the top-end premium devices to mid-end basic products. Meanwhile users continue to move away from the traditional PC as it becomes more of a shared content creation tool, while the greater flexibility of tablets, hybrids and lighter notebooks address users’ increasingly different demands.”
While mobile phone still command the largest number of devices shipped, the growth rate is much larger in the ultramobiles, which include devices such as – tablets, hybrids and clamshells. These units will take over as the main driver of growth in this market from this year on with a growth rate of in excess of 50%. In the table below you can clearly see the numbers of the past years and how, even in these hard economic times, the growth rates are impressive and the market is shifting.
